Meet Dr. Kate Moran

Partnership that catalyzes research and elevates solutions
Dr. Kate Moran is an ocean engineer and president of Ocean Networks Canada, a premier research organization for ocean observation, data collection and access, and climate action. Dr. Moran shares her perspective on why Ocean Visions is essential to connecting institutions and industry to advance solutions.

Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) has a three-part strategy: ocean observing; data collection and access; and climate action. Not only are we monitoring marine areas around Canada and across the world and promoting learning and research about the ocean, we also are actively pursuing methods to sequester carbon in the ocean or beneath the ocean floor.

Having marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR) as a long-term and scalable solution will ultimately depend on if we’re able to measure its impact. mCDR is complicated and much more research is necessary. Ocean Visions is a facilitator and catalyst for these mCDR research needs. And Ocean Networks Canada is proud and grateful to be a partner to advance ocean-climate solutions.

ONC does more than research – we can test the efficacy of potential solutions. Many ideas for ocean-climate solutions come from the lab or from modeling, but you need a higher level of technical readiness in order to gain investors to build out and scale up. What many startups essentially need is demonstrated testing of the solution or technology in the real world. This is what ONC can provide.

Without Ocean Visions we would not be in experiments with industry. And those experiments have to happen in order to move climate solutions forward. It would take much longer to find out the feasibility of various mCDR methods without such connections facilitated by Ocean Visions. Ocean Visions’ road maps have been helpful in the same regard; they have educated the community and bring together key players for important solutions advancement.

There’s a yearning among the younger scientist community to work on solutions. Ocean Visions has been very successful in supporting this cohort of younger scientists to be part of ocean and climate solutions. Bringing together scientists, NGOs, industry and government all into one Ocean Visions Summit enables a lot of partnerships and connections. They are an excellent team doing a great job.
