COP30: Advancing Ocean-Climate Solutions on the Global Stage

COP30: Advancing Ocean-Climate Solutions

The 2025 United Nations Climate Change Conference, or Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC (COP30) is being held in Belém, Brazil, from November 10 – 21, 2025.

With reports that global carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions and atmospheric concentrations both reached record highs in 2024, we need COP30 to be the moment when nations advance real, actionable steps to address the climate crisis.

As a leading organization focused on the ocean-climate nexus, Ocean Visions is participating in COP to broaden the global conversation, and actively position a solutions-oriented agenda for the next generation of ocean conservation. Our work is focused on promoting actionable ocean-based pathways to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, remove CO2 pollution, repair and restore critical marine ecosystems, and build a global, diverse community of innovators who can help develop and implement solutions at scale.

Ocean Visions will be on the ground, hosting and participating in numerous events designed to create the enabling conditions required to unlock the potential of ocean-based pathways to stabilize the climate and restore ocean health.

Events Co-Hosted by Ocean Visions

Building the Evidence Base for Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal: Strengthening Research and Government Collaboration on Emerging Ocean-Climate
November 14, 14:00-16:00 (GMT-3) | Singapore Pavilion

Marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR), including emerging approaches such as ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE), represents a critical frontier in ocean-climate innovation with the potential to make a significant contribution to long-term climate mitigation goals. As the field continues to mature, progress will depend on building a rigorous scientific foundation through modelling, controlled field trials, and comprehensive environmental impact assessments. This session brings together leading researchers, innovators, and government representatives from across the Asia-Pacific and beyond to showcase progress in mCDR science and to examine in detail promising, yet still under development, techniques like OAE. Participants will explore the advance dialogue and collaboration among national research initiatives toward strengthening the global evidence base for mCDR, and identify opportunities to advance field trials, long-term monitoring, and data-sharing frameworks.

Beyond Either–Or: Responsible Research and Governance for Climate Interventions

November 18, 11:00‐12:00 (GMT-3) | Finland Pavilion

As global emissions continue to rise, the world faces an urgent need to scale mitigation while preparing responsibly for a high-risk climate future. Emerging climate interventions are increasingly discussed, yet their framing in public and policy debates often lacks balance or nuance. Constructive, transparent, and inclusive research is essential to assess their potential roles alongside deep decarbonization. This session brings together leading voices from science, governance, and innovation to examine how research, policy, and transparent communication can move beyond “either–or” framings, ensuring that emission reductions remain central while responsibly advancing marine and atmospheric interventions. The discussion will highlight how precaution and preparedness can work hand in hand, building the scientific, ethical, and institutional foundations needed to evaluate potential benefits and risks in a balanced and forward-looking way.
