As the world faces escalating impacts of climate change—the top threat to ocean health—innovative solutions are urgently needed to reduce greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal (mCDR) represents a potentially powerful tool to help mitigate this crisis by harnessing the ocean’s natural ability to absorb and store carbon. Developing mCDR approaches could prove to be safe, viable, and scalable on levels that matter, but enhanced collaboration across sectors is critical in better understanding their full potential.
This interactive database is an up-to-date repository of actors engaged in mCDR. The ecosystem captures the breadth of actors, activities, and relationships across this diverse and evolving field.
Terminology used in this database:
- Actors: Entities such as academic institutions, NGOs, and government agencies currently working on mCDR.
- Activities: The work being done by Actors, such as research, RD&D, creating standards, and field-building. Many Actors are engaged in more than one activity.
- mCDR Approach: If an Actor does work using specific methods of mCDR, they will be noted here.
- Funded by: Identifies major funders for a particular Actor.
- Funds: Identifies which major Actors are receiving funds and from whom.
- Partners With: Other Actors involved in collaboration or partnerships; this can take many forms.
- Related to: This indicates a relationship other than a partnership or collaborations, i.e., a start-up that was spun out of an academic institution.
