About
The Ocean Visions mCDR Knowledge Platform tracks actors, field trials, and the relationships between them across the marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR) landscape. For each actor, the platform shows a description of their work, their mCDR approach, their activities, and how they are connected to other actors through funding, partnerships, and other relationships. For field trials, the platform shows the leading organization, primary mCDR pathway, trial status, start and end dates, sequestration goals, location, and the trial's objectives. Visitors can explore this information through a searchable directory, key metrics and graphs about activities in the field, pathway- and field-trial based views, and an interactive globe.
The biggest threat to the long-term health of the ocean comes from the buildup of greenhouse gas pollution in the atmosphere. Addressing this requires both reducing emissions and cleaning up greenhouse gas pollution already in the atmosphere, making it essential to advance our understanding of mCDR and its potential role in addressing the climate crisis. Ocean Visions' mCDR Knowledge Platform will evolve alongside the field, with regular updates and enhancements to ensure it remains a trusted and valuable resource. By providing a single, curated view of the actors, relationships, and field trials involved in mCDR, the platform is intended to serve researchers, funders, policymakers, and anyone seeking to understand or engage with this emerging field.

The mCDR Knowledge Platform is a single webpage, navigable using the following tabs:
- Explore different actor types in "Main" — Hover over the bubbles to learn about actor roles. Click on a bubble to go to the Directory and see each actor who plays that role.
- Dive deeper and learn about the actors in mCDR in "Directory" — Filter using the dropdowns, learn more with actor cards, and download the database for your own use.
- Visualize who is involved in mCDR work and field trials to date in "Key Metrics and Graphs" — Visualize mCDR projects and the work of actors in the field.
- Learn about mCDR technologies in "Pathways" — Learn about the various mCDR pathways, which actors are involved, and how to learn more with the Ocean Visions mCDR Road Maps.

What counts as a field trial on the platform?
Entries eligible for inclusion as a field trial should test mCDR technology systems or system components directly in ocean waters or in shore-based systems that interact with ocean waters by:
- inducing a change to the water's ability to take up carbon dioxide;
- and measuring the response to that change to characterize or improve the efficacy and/or impacts of the mCDR technology system or its component parts.
