Open Request for Proposals to Develop Environmental Impact Assessment Framework for mCDR

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change underscores the urgent need for large-scale carbon dioxide removal (CDR) to achieve climate targets. Marine CDR (mCDR) may be able to play a significant role, however, society does not yet have nearly enough information about the effectiveness or impacts of mCDR technologies to make informed decisions about their potential use at scale. Responsible research, including field testing, must accelerate to answer critical questions about mCDR technologies, including their impacts on marine ecosystems and communities that rely on them.

To address this challenge and aid in decision making on mCDR operations, Ocean Visions is pleased to announce a funding opportunity to develop a comprehensive mCDR Environmental Impact Assessment Framework. This tool is intended to support the planning, decision-making, and execution of mCDR field research and development projects by providing a standardized approach to assessing the environmental impacts of mCDR activities.

Ocean Visions intends to select one team as the overall winner for an award of up to $1.5 million dollars for a period of up to 24 months.

Pre-proposals are due by 16 October 2024 21:00 GMT.

If you are interested in applying, please review the full Request for Proposals document for more details, including the application process, timelines, and eligibility criteria. We have also published a Networking Tool for interested individuals or organizations seeking partnerships.
